In 1607, when Captain John Smith and his 'Coatmen' arrive in Powhatan to begin settling the colony of Virginia, thay are regarded by the land's existing inhabitants with both fascination and fear. The Coatmen have no idea which ground is best for planting crops; they display little interest in befriending the Powhatan tribe; and worst of all, they greet visitors with a shower of bullets from their frightening 'thunder sticks.' Pocahontas, beloved daughter of the Pohatan chief, Mamantowic, longs for and understanding between her tribe and the Coatmen. Though she is only eleven years old, this astute young girl acts with wisdom and compasson, and plays a fateful, peacful role in the destenies of two peoples. Told in the alternating voices of John Smith and Pocahontas, this book reveals an important part of American history through the eyes of two legendary figures.
